When I talk to players about Atlas, there’s one phrase I often hear: “Atlas could be my perfect game.”
As a developer, it’s very exciting to hear so many people express that opinion. You can’t help but think “Wow, people really love what our game has to offer.” But when you work on an Xbox Game Preview title, you also have to recognize that the operative words in that phrase are “could be.”
When players start joining the game today on Xbox One, they’ll experience the most polished, most stable, and most fun version of this massive pirate adventure to date. But it’s not the final version of the game. On the contrary: for the development team, the Xbox One release marks just the beginning of our continued efforts to make Atlas the ultimate pirate experience!
In Atlas, you’ll discover all sorts of unique gameplay, which I collectively like to call “true piracy.” On most official servers the rules are simple: if you can get your hands on it, you can take it. Want that player’s ship over there? Defeat the crew in combat and it’s all yours. That island on the horizon look inviting? Claim it and build your own hideout there. Our fully persistent world means that the actions you take and the structures you build stick around for everyone else to see (which means there’s always more loot to plunder). The real question: do you have what it takes to survive in this cutthroat environment and become a pirate legend?
With crossplay enabled between Xbox One and Steam PC, we’re thrilled to be connecting Xbox players with all of our existing scallywags so that everyone can have new pirate adventures together. Join us on our official forums (playatlas.com), our official Discord channel (discord.gg/playatlas), and on social media to be a part of the conversation throughout Atlas’ Xbox Game Preview development. Tell us what you love, what you think needs improvement, and what sort of things you’d like to see next. Your input is very important to us.
The dev team is already hard at work on numerous quality of life improvements, bug fixes, balance tweaks, and performance increases across the board — many directly inspired by player feedback and all of which will have our full attention in the months to come. Past that, we’ll be focusing on the ship/sailing aspects of the game to make being a pirate at sea feel even more exciting and memorable.
We’ll see you all on the high seas and we can’t wait to work together to create an experience that, we hope, you’ll be able to call your “perfect game,” too.
